Abstract
Introduction: VigiMed is the system made available by Anvisa since December 2018 for reporting suspected adverse events related to medicines and vaccines. Notifications can be submitted by healthcare professionals, marketing authorization holders, citizens, and other interested professionals. Antineoplastic drugs have a complex safety profile and fragile clinical studies, making continuous evaluation of their use through pharmacovigilance studies essential. In addition, the completeness of data entered in notifications of suspected adverse drug events (ADEs) is necessary to enable a robust analysis of the profile of these events. Objective: To describe the completeness of suspected ADE data reported in the VigiMed system involving antineoplastic drugs, according to the main notifier. Methods: A descriptive study of suspected ADE notifications submitted to VigiMed involving antineoplastic drugs between January 2019 and March 2023. Results: During the evaluated period, 29,656 (18.0%) notifications mentioned at least one antineoplastic drug, with the “Pharmacist” (48.0%; n=14,767) being the main notifier. Regarding the data considered essential for evaluating a potential ADE, pharmacists proved to be important notifiers, given the higher completeness of information on age (n=12,703; 86.5%), weight (n=9,842; 66.6%), outcome (n=22,596; 72.6%), marketing authorization holder (n=5,955; 28.0%), and route of administration (n=14,409; 68.0%) when this professional was the main notifier. On the other hand, information such as the sex of the person involved in the notification (n=4,101; 98.2%); classification of the reaction as “serious” or “nonserious” (n=21,280; 98.6%); and indication for use of the suspected medicine (n=4,291; 60.9%) were more complete when provided by a “Consumer or other nonhealthcare professional”. It is important to highlight that, overall, missing data were significant for many variables, such as the “concentration” of the suspected antineoplastic drug, which was recorded for only 9,377 (21.6%) of the medicines involved in notifications. In addition, the “indication” field presented a higher number of empty fields (n=24,649; 56.8%) than completed fields for all notifiers, as well as the “marketing authorization holder” field (n=32,916; 76.0%). Conclusions: In this study, pharmacists stood out as important notifiers of suspected ADEs involving antineoplastic drugs, considering the percentage of notifications submitted by these professionals and the greater completeness of the data provided. Engagement and education initiatives should be directed toward professionals and citizens to increase the number of notifications and improve data completeness, which remains insufficient for many essential variables.
