Abstract
Introduction: Underreporting of adverse events by healthcare teams is an important limitation in health services and may result from: the time required to report; fear of the consequences of reporting; lack of feedback; and uncertainty about what to report. Objective: To assess the impact on the number of voluntary reports following training of the healthcare team through gamification in a sentinel hospital in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Methods: A longitudinal descriptive study was conducted between Jan/22 and Jun/23 in a tertiary hospital in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Playful training sessions were conducted with the healthcare team through games in two stages: Jun/22 and Jan/23. For this purpose, the wards were visited daily by a pharmacy intern to reach a larger number of staff members (Physicians, Nurses, and Nursing Technicians). The games addressed questions about: how and where to report adverse events; the importance of pharmacovigilance actions; and patient safety culture. Feedback cards with chocolates began to be sent monthly to reporters and, as of Jun/22, the staff member who submitted the highest number of reports per month received an institutional good practice certificate. Finally, a video on the topic was made available on the institutional training platform. To evaluate the results, information was extracted from the institution's pharmacovigilance service database, and the impact of the actions was measured through a percentage comparison of the average number of reports per semester after the two study stages, using Microsoft Office 365 Excel. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee, CAAE: 70731023.2.0000.5520. Results and Conclusion: The monthly average number of reports before the intervention stages was 72, which increased to 85 after the first training phase and to 100 after the second phase. This means that after the first training stage, there was an 18% increase, due to the recent implementation of measures to encourage reporting. However, after the second training stage, there was an average percentage increase of 38.9% compared with the initial stage, demonstrating the effectiveness of engagement actions and the strengthening of pharmacovigilance activities. Reducing underreporting is a challenge and is often associated with healthcare teams' lack of knowledge about the importance of pharmacovigilance activities. The results presented reinforce the importance of continuous actions aimed at demystifying the punitive culture and highlighting the association between pharmacovigilance activities and patient safety. Underreporting is a reality in the hospital setting; therefore, it is necessary to intensify among healthcare professionals the importance of voluntary reporting in order to facilitate the analysis of possible adverse events and ensure greater safety in the care provided to patients.
