Abstract
Introduction: Precocious puberty (PP) is defined by early pubertal development, characterized by the appearance of breasts in girls before the age of 8 and by an increase in testicular volume greater than or equal to 4 ml in boys before the age of 9. It is considered a rare disease, being 10 to 23 times more frequent in girls than in boys. The cause is not well defined and its diagnosis is based on physical examination, laboratory and imaging tests. The disease can interfere in the final height of the patient, who may have the growth plates of the bones closed prematurely and consequently reach a height below the genetic target. Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the demographic profile of patients with PP treated by the Specialized Component of Pharmaceutical Assistance (CEAF) in Maceió. Material and Method: The CEAF of Maceió treated 210 patients with PP, of which 4% were male and 96% were female. Most patients (83%) identify as mixed race, followed by white (14%), black (2%) and indigenous (0.5%). Most patients are between 8 years old (28%), 9 years old (32%) and 10 years old (30%). Significant differences were found between the age, sex and race of the patients analyzed. The results show a predominance of girls, mixed race and aged between 8 and 10 years. The prevalence of girls is in accordance with the literature, which affects more girls than boys, with a ratio of 23:1. The age group affected may reflect a pattern of early puberty. The high number of mixed race individuals is a reflection of the region of the state of Alagoas, composed mostly of mixed race population. Results: The CEAF of Maceió treated 210 patients with PP, of which 4% are male and 96% are female. Most patients (83%) identify as mixed race, followed by white (14%), black (2%) and indigenous (0.5%). Most patients were between 8 years old (28%), 9 years old (32%) and 10 years old ( 30%). Significant differences were found between the age, sex and race of the patients analyzed. The results showed a predominance of girls, brown skinned and aged between 8 and 10 years. The prevalence of girls is in agreement with the literature, which affects more girls than boys, with a ratio of 23:1. The age group affected may reflect a pattern of early puberty. The high number of brown skinned individuals is a reflection of the region of the state of Alagoas, which is composed of a majority of the brown population. Conclusions: The early onset of puberty in children, in addition to impairing final height, can affect patients psychologically and emotionally. Therefore, understanding the demographic profile of patients with PP treated by CEAF in Maceió is essential to improve the quality of care and ensure access to the necessary medications for the target population. This data helps in the formulation of more specific public policies and contributes to the adequate planning of SUS resources, aiming to improve the quality of life of patients.
